In a move that might prove all too difficult and stressful for the liberal party, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet with his disgruntled ministers in Halifax for the annual cabinet retreat for three days during the country’s hardest times.
But while a gathering of the liberal party may come as a sign of unification and understanding from Trudeau, most liberal MPs think it is the perfect time for confrontation and a drastic change of plans for the party.
This gathering comes on the heels of a year marred by poor polling numbers and growing unrest among Liberal MPs. So, with some members of the Liberal caucus calling for significant changes and a public display of contrition from Trudeau, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
The cabinet retreat is poised to address crucial issues like cost of living, housing, and healthcare.
All these while focusing on strengthening Canada’s relationship with the United States. But will this high-profile meeting bring the much-needed reset for Trudeau’s troubled government? Or will the wheels keep turning and the problems get sidelined?

The atmosphere within the Liberal Party is anything but tranquil.
With dire polling numbers indicating a consistent 15-point lead for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, Trudeau’s Liberals appear to be scrambling for solutions.
The recent byelection loss in Toronto-St. Paul’s has only deepened the sense of urgency, as it broke down Trudeau alongside every minister and MP that was vehemently loyal to him and his liberal agenda.
While some MPs that have not yet lost their common sense fully have openly suggested that it might be time for Trudeau to step down.
Perhaps Trudeau has spent too much time perfecting his hair and selfies with the fans rather than actually being honest to god prime minister for the Canadian people.
Despite holding private discussions acknowledging the shortcomings of his administration, Trudeau has steadfastly avoided any public admission of failure. It’s almost as if he believes that sweeping challenges under the rug will magically make them disappear—just like an illusionist at a kid’s birthday party.
As MPs call for a major cabinet shuffle, simplified public messaging, and a more aggressive campaign to contrast the Liberals with the Conservatives, it’s evident that even those within Trudeau’s inner circle recognize the need for a profound transformation.
“We’re looking like an old and tired government,” admitted one Liberal MP. Another MP stressed that remorsefulness and empathy could be Trudeau’s path forward, yet we’ve seen as much humility from him as we have always had since he assumed power in 2015 – absolutely none.
And that is why it is pretty understandable why a retreat in the middle of several crises going on right now is not going to lead to a stress free environment where the liberal MPs will stash away their major concerns and focus on the liberal party winning overall.
Trudeau Realizes Things Are Different
Now things are different, they are deeply into the defensive territory and it looks like there is no coming back from that for the time being. So they converse, they whisper, and they plan to see how well Trudeau will deal with the chaos and how he is going to solve it. Spoiler alert: he doesn’t solve it anyway and the liberal party gets the biggest humbling of its existence once and for all.
But what can they do right now to ease the upcoming losses really?
Well, the Liberals aren’t shy about peeking south of the border for inspiration. Prime Minister Trudeau has tried channelling the Democrats’ messaging of joy and optimism, much like Kamala Harris. But contrary to Disneyland fairy tales, this approach seems to fall flat for a government in its third term.
As one Liberal MP curtly observed, “There’s fatigue that’s not cured with a smile.” Talk about a reality check.
One particularly infamous example crying for explanation is Trudeau’s open-door policy which has allowed an influx of temporary foreign workers and international students into Canada.
Some MPs believe this policy decision needs personal addressing by Trudeau to the Canadian public. This isn’t exactly rocket science; the economy is intricately tied to the number of people entering and leaving the country. Yet, Trudeau remains almost secretive about it.
Despite the chaos, MPs like Julie Dzerowicz remain hopeful for a clear vision post the September cabinet retreat. Others see this as a make-or-break situation, with MPs circulating lists of cabinet ministers they’d like to be shuffled out of their positions.
If Only This Was Fiction
The drama and cloak-and-dagger intrigue would make for a gripping political thriller if it weren’t the real-life future of our nation.
Looking at the bigger picture, the cabinet discussions will also delve into Canada’s fraught trade relations with China. With the US applying new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, and steel, Canada’s response—or lack thereof—has garnered significant attention.
Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturing Association, cautiously anticipates that Canada will mirror America’s stance but has noted the Americans seem ‘nervous’ about Canada’s support. Leave it to Trudeau to keep allies guessing.

With unwavering support from some MPs and a loud chorus calling for change, one can’t help but ponder: Can Trudeau really turn the tide for his party? Unlike the optimistic plotlines that Trudeau loves to emulate from down south, Canadian voters are clearly more grounded in reality and have had enough of Trudeau’s bullshit.
